A Note From the Artist
This photo was a part of a collaboration between myself and the OnlyFans star Paul Howard. This series was taken along side custom content for one of his clients, and the we used this opportunity to create photos that largely to explore moments of exhibitionism and voyeurism.
Our biggest challenge with this series was purely legal, and one any exhibitionist can certainly imagine themselves: how can we explore authentic moments of exhibitionism in photography without creating harm for ourselves or others? We found that the solution to our problem came down to planning on being in the right place at the right time, as well as quick coverups and getaways for any worst-case-scenario that may have arisen.
We spent a whole day in a hotel room coming up with various fantasies and pouring them into images as best as we could. In this moment we were imagining Paul in the heat of masturbation, and what it would be like to be peering on him as an outsider. We set him up at the desk of our hotel room with his laptop open and his dick in hand. I walked outside to where I could only see him through the window and began to take the photo.
When we've exhibited the piece in galleries it's been a fascinating one to watch the public engage with. Compared to other pieces in this series the content of the image is incredibly subtle. At first glance it seems almost abstract, with the glare of the window putting the city skyline on center stage. It takes a moment for the viewer to realize what exactly they're peering in on. It’s a piece that entices one into letting their gaze linger.
Something I’ve always loved about exhibitionism and voyeurism art is the way in which it, ironically, normalizes sexuality. It plants the highly stigmatized activity of sex within polite society, as if that were an acceptable thing to do. This quote from The Ethical Slut by Dossie Easton and Janet W. Hardy comes to mind:
“We believe that it is a fundamentally radical political act to deprivatize sex. So much oppression in our culture is based on shame about sex: the oppression of women, cultural minorities, and sexual minorities. All these kinds of oppression are instituted in the name of the (presumably asexual) family. We are all oppressed. We have all been taught, one way or another, that our desires, our bodies, our sexualities are shameful. What bettre way to defeat oppression than to get together in communities and celebrate the wonders of sex? […] when we play in a group of people, we ge the powerful reinforcement that sex is good and beautiful and that we are hot and sexy people.”
Normalizing sensuality is something I have strived to do throughout my body of work. Paul and I had a truly lovely time embracing our inner perverts for this project, and we hope that this piece allows you to do the same.
