A Note From the Artist
This photo is part of a greater collaboration between Earthly Venus and Paul Howard. Many of the photos in this voyeuristic series depict male masturbation, and Paul and I simply wanted him to look amazing!
I used a nearly backlit flash to highlight all of the contours of his physique. I wanted the light to be harsh, yet flattering.
And this served the art in two ways, because one of the challenges Paul and I often run into is finding creative and organic ways of keeping vast majority of his images anonymous. While it's not uncommon for creators on adult platforms to do the same, it's easy to fall into the same tropes over and over again: the mask, the arm over the face, looking away. This photo was unique in the sense that his face is entirely in frame but also completely invisible.
I love this photo, and have found that it has a truly unique way of demanding attention. Even in explicitly sexual showcases, audiences have found the image both alluring and jarring. When this series has been exhibited in galleries, this is the shot that people will giggle about, take pictures of, and force their friends to regard. I believe that gender plays a huge role in that, as we often don't see such glamorized depictions of male masturbation. And knowing what I know now about the spectacle this photograph causes, I think that's a shame; it's a moment of intimacy people clearly long to regard.
